INTRODUCTION:

             A.         Prayer, for the Christian, is a powerful privilege; Matthew 7:7-8

             B.         James wrote; James 5:16

             C.        Our lesson; “God Answers Prayers”; Matthew 6:6

I.           JESUS TELLS US HOW NOT TO PRAY:

             A.        “Not as hypocrites; Matthew 6:5

                        1.         To be seen of men; Matthew 23:5

                        2.         Desire to give God information; Luke 18:11-12

             B.        Not as the Gentiles; Matthew 6:7

                        1.          Vain repetitions;

                        2.          Such not needed; Matthew 6:8

                        3.          Examples of vain repetitions:

                                     a.        Prophets of Baal; I Kings 18:25-29

                                     b.       “Guard, guide, keep are repetitions

                       4. Not vain to repeat prayer at intervals; Matthew 26:36-44

II.          JESUS TELLS US HOW TO PRAY:

             A.        In secret; Matthew 6:6

                        1.           Hypocrisy cannot ride on wings of secret prayer; James 5:16

                        2.           Should proceed public praying

                        3.           Not suitable for the assembly; I Corinthians 14:16-17

                        4.           Cannot take the place of prayer in worship; Acts 2:42; 12:12

           B.          Forgive those who offend you; Matthew 6:14-15

           C.          “In faith, nothing doubting”; James 1:5-8

           D.          The Model Prayer; Matthew 6:9-13

                        1.           The invocation; Matthew 6:9 (NKJV)

                        2.           Petition regarding others; Matthew 6:10 (NKJV)

                        3.           Three petitions for self and others; Matthew 6:11-13 (NKJV)

          E. Must ask in the name of Christ; John 14:13 (NKJV)

CONCLUSION:

          A.          For prayers to be effective, they must be sincere; James 5:16

          B.          Pray as if the answer was already received; James 1:5-8

          C.          Does God answer your prayers?
