ABRAHAM FULLY RELIED ON GOD

HEBREWS 11:8-19

INTRODUCTION:

A.  Two words:

      1.  “Fully” = “To the full; completely; entirely; thoroughly”; Proverbs 3:5

      2.  “Rely” = “To have confidence in (trust); to look to for support or

aid; to depend upon”; Philippians 4:19

B.  Our study “Abraham Fully Relied On God”

  I.  BACKGROUND ON ABRAM (ABRAHAM); Genesis 11:

A.  A descendant of Seth; the son of Noah; Genesis 11:1-26 (10, 27)

B.  The son of Terah from the land of Ur; Genesis 11:26

      1.  Area noted for worshipping false gods; Genesis 11:31

      2.  Terah died at the age of 205 years; Genesis 11:32

II.  GOD’S CALL TO ABRAHAM: GENESIS 12:1

A.  Two fold nature of the call: Genesis 12:1

      1.  Leave your country, your father’s house, and your kindred

      2.  Get to a land that I will show you

B.  God promised to bless Abraham:

      1.  I will make of you a great nation; Genesis 12:2

      2.  I will give you a great name; Genesis 12:2

      3.  I will protect you; Genesis 12:3

      4.  In you will all nations of the earth be blessed; Genesis 12:3

      5.  I will give this land to your seed; Genesis 12:7

C.  A Significant Point: Abraham was 75 years old when he received

the call and had no children at the time; Genesis 12:4

III.  ABRAHAM RELIED FULLY ON GOD:

A.  “By faith Abraham obeyed: Hebrews 11:8

       1.  For 25 years Abraham relied upon God and when he was 100

years old God blessed him with a son; Genesis 21:5

       2.  By faith, Abraham sojourned in the land of promise, dwelling in

            tents; Hebrews 11:9

B.  Important fact: Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob all died in faith not

      receiving the promise; Hebrews 11:13

IV.  A GREAT TRIAL OF FAITH: HEBREWS 11:17-19

A.  God told Abraham; Genesis 22:2

B.  By faith Abraham offered up the son of promise; Hebrews 11:17

C.  Abraham was able to do what was necessary because he relied on God:

      Hebrews 11:19

CONCLUSION:

A.  In all his trials and hardships, Abraham relied on God

B.  He had complete confidence in God and therefore trusted in God for support

C.  Are you fully relying on God? Philippians 4:19
