COLOSSIANS 2:6-23

INTRODUCTION:

A.  Love is the guiding force behind all that a Christian does; I Corinthians 13:1-3

      1.  Jesus stated that love identifies one as His disciple; John 13:35

      2.  John wrote that one cannot keep God’s will without love;

           I John 5:1-3

B.  Many songs have been written concerning the importance and binding power of love:

      1.  “Bind Us Together”- As the body of Christ; Colossians 2:19

      2.  “Angry Words” – Love one another, a command of God;  Hebrews 13:1

      3.  Other songs: “Blest Be The Tie”; “God’s Family”; “How Sweet, How Heavenly”; “My Task”;                   “They’ll Know We Are Christians By Our Love”

C.  Our lesson today “Bind Us Together Lord”

I.  A CLOSER LOOK, A MESSAGE OF LOVE AND UNITY:

A.  All who are in Christ are one; I Corinthians 12:12-13

      1.  Those who have received Him; Colossians 2:6, 10-12

      2.  Have been taught the faith of the gospel; Colossians 2:7

      3.  These must remain connected to Christ; Colossians 2:19

B.  Those in Christ are made complete in Him; Colossians 2:9-10

      1.  Paul’s desire was that the brethren at Colosse and Laodicea be bound together in love; Colossians               2:1-2

      2.  Paul encourages the brethren to walk in Christ, (be faithful);  Colossians 2:6

II.  BEING BOUND TOGETHER IN LOVE:

A.  Comforts the hearts of all; Colossians 2:2a; I Thessalonians 4:18

B.  Offers assurance; Colossians 2:2b

C.  Strengthens (establishes) the bond; Colossians 2:7

      1.  Helps in bearing burdens; Galatians 6:2

      2.  When we rejoice and weep together; Romans 12:15

CONCLUSION:

A.  God offers the power to mend all spiritual weakness; I Peter 4:8

B.  Paul warns the brethren of the dangers of failing to love; Colossians 2:8

C.  Let us increase in our love for God and one another; I Thessalonians 3:12
