BLESSINGS FOUND IN FORGIVENESS

ROMANS 4:1- 8

INTRODUCTION:

A.  Paul quoted; Psalm 32:1-2

B.  Key words:

      1.  Iniquity; “Lawlessness; wickedness; unrighteousness”

      2.  Sin; “Missing the mark”

      3.  Impute; “To put down to a person’s account”

C.  The forgiven person is blessed; He can therefore:

      1.  Appreciate the love of God; Romans 5:6-10

      2.  Appreciate the grace of God; Romans 3:24

      3.  Appreciate the longsuffering of God; Romans 2:4

      4.  Appreciate the sacrifice of Christ; Romans 5:9

D.  Realizing forgiveness should motivate obedience; Romans 6:17-18

E.  Knowing the reality of forgiveness should help us to rejoice; Romans 5:1-2

I. BEFORE FORGIVENESS:

   A.  One is condemned; Romans 3:23-24; 8:1, 9; 2:4-10

   B.  One is in bondage to sin; Romans 3:24; 6:17-18

         1.  Sinners may view Christianity as slavery; Romans 12:1-2

         2.  People in sin are in a state of moral slavery; II Peter 2:19

   C.  Before forgiveness one is alienated from God; Romans 5:8-10

I.  BLESSINGS IN FORGIVENESS:

    A.  Life; Romans 6:1-4

          1.  “Life” is not merely biological existence; Psalm 104:29; Ecclesiastes 12:7

          2.  Man cannot “live” by bread alone; Matthew 4:4

          3.  Christians have life now; John 10:10; Titus 1:2

   B.  Hope; Romans 8:24; I Peter 1:3-5

   C.  Peace; Romans 5:1; 4:7, 8

   D.  Joy; Romans 5:2;

        1.  The eunuch; Acts 8:39

        2.  The jailer rejoiced in forgiveness; Acts 16:34

        3.  Early church example; Acts 2:46

III.  BECOMING A BLESSING:

     A.  The one forgiven is blessed but he is also a blessing to others

     B.  He exerts the right influence; I Timothy 4:12

     C.  He seeks to lead others to forgiveness; Matthew 28:18-20

CONCLUSION:

     A.  Obtaining forgiveness: The power is in the blood; Colossians 1:14; Romans 5:9; 6:1-4

     B.  Covering sins cannot be accomplished by human measures; Ephesians 2:8, 9; Titus 3:5

     C.  Sins are covered by God’s grace and the blood of Jesus
