CONFESSION

ROMANS 10:8-13

INTRODUCTION:

A.  God has always told mankind what he requires; Hebrews 1:1-2

B.  He is specific in His direction and requires obedience; Genesis 6:8, 22; Hebrews 11:8

C.  Christians are to do the Father’s will; Matthew 7:21

I.  CONFESSION IN THE CONTEXT: Romans 10:8-10

A.  Israel had rejected Christ, the Living Word of God; Romans 10:1-7

B.  Belief and confession are necessary to obtain salvation; Romans 10:6-8

      1.  onfession by mouth is unto (toward) salvation; Romans 10:10

      2.  Obedience must follow for confession to be effective; Romans 10:16-17

II.  OTHER USES OF THE WORD CONFESSION IN SCRIPTURE:

A.  Confess, confessed, confesseth, confessing, confession, profession, used 44 times in scripture

B.  Greek word “homologeho” – “to assent, to covenant, to acknowledge, confess, profess, confession is made, to give thanks, promise”

      1.  When one confesses Christ, he moves toward a covenant relationship with Him; Romans 10:10

      2.  Confession contains a promise of obedience; Romans 10:16

C.  The Hebrew writer stated; Hebrews 10:23

D.  Some falsely equate confession by mouth as salvation; Romans 10:10

      1.  Paul’s confession and salvation; Acts 9:6; 22:16

      2.  Paul would receive eternal salvation when his race was completed; II Timothy 4:6-8

III.  CONFESSION (PROFESSION) IS A LIFE-LONG COVENANT: Hebrews 4:14

A.  Jesus pointed out the importance of continual faithfulness; Matthew 10:16-18; 10:22, 23, 28

B.  Jesus stated; Matthew 10:32-33

     1.  Confession (profession) involves a covenant relation and sacrifice; Matthew 10:37-39

     2.  A daily walk with the Lord; Ephesians 4:1; Matthew 24:13

CONCLUSION:

A.  One who desires to be saved will confess Christ before men; Romans 10:9-10

B.  A Christian will confess Christ in his daily walk, Matthew 7:21
