Deliverance Requires us to Grow

Introduction:  We have been transformed but the person we are tomorrow needs to be a better version of who we are today.   That doesn’t mean we won’t have bad days but we always have the goal of growing and not being complacent in our faith.

Luke 2:52- Jesus increased in wisdom and stature and in favor with God and men

  • Jesus showed us by example that we were to continue to grow as people.
  • 2 Peter 3:18- but grow in the grace and the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
  1. Growth doesn’t happen without the right soil

Luke 8:4-8- The parable of the sower

Luke 8:11-15- The parable of the sower explained

  • The seed is the word of God
  • The soil is the heart of the individual
  • Wayside- they hear but the devil comes and takes away the word
  • Rock- receive the word with joy but don’t take root.
  • Thorns- they go out and are choked by the cares and don’t make it to maturity
  • Good ground- the seed grows and produces fruit.
  1. We Have to Feed Ourselves if we Intend to Grow
  • Good ground- the seed grows and produces fruit.

The Native American parable on the two dogs inside me:

  • Are we feeding our hearts with the lusts of the flesh or with the fruits of the spirit?  Galatians 5:16-23

Psalm 119:11- Thy word I have hidden in my heart that I might not sin against You.

Jeremiah 17:9- The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it?

Proverbs 4:23- Guard your heart with all diligence for out of it flow the issues of life.

  • If the heart isn’t right then growth will not take place.
  • You are in control of what goes in and out of your heart and mind!
  • Music, Entertainment, Movies all can impact the heart in a terrible way

  1. Growth Should be our Desire

1 Peter 2:1-2- We should desire the milk of the word as a newborn babe, so that we can grow.

  • We can’t stay on the milk of the word only we need some more substantial food.

Hebrews 5:12-14- At this time you ought to be teachers.  You haven’t grown as you should have.

  • We should be striving to get off of the milk and get into the meat.
  • This shows that we are maturing as a Christian.
  • Is your knowledge the same today that it was this time last year?

2 Peter 1:5-11- Add to your faith so that you won’t be unfruitful
