PROVERBS 4:1-10

INTRODUCTION:

A.  Some say that doctrine is not important:

      1.  “It doesn’t matter what you believe, as long as you are sincere”

      2.  “We are all working for the same thing”

B.  Has God changed that much? Hebrews 13:8

C.  What the Bible has to say about doctrine; Proverbs 4:1-2 (NKJV)

I. “FOR I GIVE YOU GOOD DOCTRINE”: Proverbs 4:2

A.  Has always done so; Genesis 2:16-17; Philippians 4:19

      1.  Old Testament; “Until the Messiah” came; Deuteronomy 4:1-2

      2.  Death of Jesus and a final plan; Hebrews 2:9; 5:8-9; 8:6

B.  God wants only what is best for man; Romans 1:16-17

II.  IS DOCTRINE IMPORTANT TODAY? Matthew 7:21; James 1:22

A.  Apostolic teaching; Romans 16:17

      1.  Speak/practice sound doctrine; I Timothy 1:3, 10; II Timothy 3:6-7, 13, 16

      2.  Scripture is for doctrine; II Timothy 3:16-17; 4:2; II John 9-10

      3.  Warning: Ephesians 4:14

B.  The Lord’s teaching; John 7:17

C.  Early church practice; Acts 2:42

III.  “ALL THINGS GIVEN”; II Peter 1:3-4

A.  Those who want salvation must apply these things; II Peter 1:5-7

B.  Must be faithful in all things; II Peter 1:8-10

CONCLUSION:

A.  God has always told mankind what He expects of them; Leviticus 22:31;

John 14:15

B.  The New Testament is still God’s way to salvation; Romans 1:16-18
