Ephesians 4:17-32

INTRODUCTION:

A.  The church and the world are very different: II Corinthians 6:17

      1.  The church is the kingdom of people redeemed by Christ; Ephesians 1:7

      2.  The world is alienated from God; Ephesians 2:12

B.  The church has been sealed with the Holy Spirit of God; Ephesians 1:13

      1.  Sin separates man from God; Isaiah 59:1-2

      2.  The Christian died to sin and has been made alive with Christ;

           Romans 6:6-10

C.  In our text Christians are told “Do not Grieve the Holy Spirit of God”

I.  CHRISTIANS ARE TO “PUT OFF THE OLD MAN”:

A.  The “old man” is corrupt in his ways; Ephesians 4:22

      1.  He is vain in his mind; Ephesians 4:17

      2.  He closes his heart to God’s way; Ephesians 4:18

B.  The spirit of the “old man”; Ephesians 4:19

      1.  The “old man” lives according to the flesh; Galatians 5:19-21

      2.  Solomon stated; Ecclesiastes 2:11

II.  THE CHRISTIAN IS TO LEARN TO BE LIKE CHRIST: Ephesians 4:20-21

A.  He is to be “renewed in the spirit” of his mind; Ephesians 4:23

      1.  This renewal brings transformation; Romans 12:2

      2.  Renewal takes place daily; II Corinthians 4:15-16

      3.  Renewal molds the Christian into the image of Christ;

           Colossians 3:10

B.  The “new man” is created in “righteousness and true holiness”;

      Ephesians 4:24

     1.  “After God” or in the image of God; I Peter 1:15

     2.  A change in lifestyle is required; Ephesians 4:25-31

III.  “GRIEVE NOT THE HOLY SPIRIT OF GOD”: Ephesians 4:30

A.  To fail to become like Christ will grieve the Spirit of God;

      Ephesians 4:29

B.  The heart of righteousness is portrayed; Ephesians 4:32

C.  Paul told the brethren at Thessalonica; I Thessalonians 5:19

CONCLUSION:

A.  Each Christian is responsible in keeping the Spirit of God alive;

      II Timothy 1:6

B.  Let us strive to be like Christ in all our ways; Ephesians 4:20-21
