HUMBLE YOURSELVES

JAMES 4:1-11

INTRODUCTION:

A.  Jesus is our example:

      1.  In mind; Philippians 2:5-8

      2.  In action; John 13:4-15

B.  The Lord expects His people to humble themselves; II Chronicles 7:14

       1.  God demands a humble spirit; Micah 6:8

       2.   “Clothed with humility”; I Peter 5:5; 2:21

C.  Our study, “Humble Yourselves”

I. “HUMBLE YOURSELVES”: James 4:10

    A.  Greek word “tapĕinŏō” = “to depress; to humiliate (in condition or heart); to abase; to bring low; to             humble (self)”

           1.  The sinner; Job 22:29

           2.  God will “revive”; Isaiah 57:15

   B.  Greek word “tapĕinophrŏsunē” = “humiliation of mind; modesty; humbleness of mind; humility;               lowliness of mind”; Philippians 2:3

         1.  The wise man stated; Proverbs 16:18-19

         2.  The words of Jesus; Matthew 23:12

   C.  Like a little child; Matthew 18:4

II.  “SUBMIT YOURSELVES”: James 4:7

      A.  Greek word “hupŏtassō” = “to subordinate; to obey (to be under obedience); put under; subdue                  unto; to be made subject to; to be in subjection to; to submit self unto”; Hebrews 12:7-8

            1.  Allow God to work in you; Romans 12:3

            2.  Enoch an example; Genesis 5:24

     B.  Submission involves trust; I Peter 5:6-7; Philippians 4:19; Proverbs 3:5-6

     C.  Submission requires resistance of evil; James 4:7

CONCLUSION:

A.  Have you humbled yourself before God?

B.  Will you not submit to Him today?
