JAMES 4:1-11

INTRODUCTION:

A.  Humility is clearly seen in the lives of the righteous; Philippians 2:8

B.  Christians are to be “clothed” in humility; I Peter 5:5

C.  A further look: “Humble Yourselves #2”

I. “DRAW NIGH TO GOD”: James 4:8-9

A.  Two Greek words:

      1.  “Hĕlkō” = “to draw; drag”

      2.  “Ěggizō” = “to approach; to make (self) near; to come (draw near); to be at hand”

B.  God does not force men; Deuteronomy 30:19; Matthew 11:28-30

C.  False humility will not avail; Colossians 2:18-23

II.  TRUE HUMILITY WILL:

A.  Open the heart to God; John 3:16

      1.  Cause one to recognize his sinfulness; James 4:8

      2.  Cause one to turn from sin; James 4:9

      3.  Cause one to submit to God; James 4:10

B.  Never be puffed up; James 4:13-17

      1.  Will glorify God; I Corinthians 10:31

      2.  Not take undue credit; Luke 17:10

III.  SIGNS THAT PEOPLE HAVE NOT HUMBLED THEMSELVES:

A.  When there is strive and wars; James 4:1-2; I Corinthians 3:3; James 3:16

B.  Friendship with the world destroys humility; James 4:4

C.  Speaking evil of fellow Christians; James 4:11

D.  Failure to follow the Lord’s Way; James 4:13-17

CONCLUSION:

A.  Jesus gave us an example to follow; Hebrews 5:8-9

B.  We must do as He has done; John 13:15

C.  Have we truly humble ourselves before God?
