C.   What revealed knowledge tells us about “The Church and Her Elders”

I.  ELDERS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN NEEDED: Proverbs 11:14

     A.  Guidance is needed in all fields; I Timothy 4:11-16

     B.  Old Testament practice:

            1.  Moses and Aaron; Exodus 3-5 (4:14-1

            2.  Joshua led the children into Canaan; Joshua 1:1-2

            3.  Judges and kings; I Samuel – II Chronicles

     C.  Jesus did not leave his people without guidance; Hebrews 1:1-2; I Titus 1:5

II.  THE WORK OF THE ELDERSHIP:

      A.  Oversee the church; Acts 20:28

      B.  Watch for souls; Hebrews 13:17

      C.  Feed and Guide: Shepherds tending the flock; I Peter 5:1-3

III.  THE RELATIONSHIP OF CHRISTIANS TO ELDERS: Hebrews 13:7

       A.  Obey them; Hebrews 13:17

       B.  Esteem them highly; I Thessalonians 5:12-13

       C.  Count them worthy of double honor; I Timothy 5:17-20

       D.  To fail to show proper attitude is to sin against God; James 4:17

             1.  Christians are to submit to the elders who lead well; Hebrews 13:17

             2.  Elders are hindered when the church refuses to obey them;

                  Hebrews 10:25-29

CONCLUSION:

       A.  God organized the church as he wants it to be; Titus 1:5

       B.  To do less than God requires is to fail in that point; Matthew 7:23
