REST FROM GOD

Hebrews 4:1-13

INTRODUCTION:

A.  Rest is a comforting thought

B.  Greek word “Katapauo” – “to settle down; to cause to cease; to cause to rest; to give rest; to give final rest”

C.  The text speaks of three rests:

      1.  “A day of rest” given to Israel; Hebrews 4:4

      2.  “A land of rest”; Hebrews 4:3, 5

      3.  “The rest that remains” (Eternal “Rest From God”);

            Hebrews 4:9-11

I. “A DAY OF REST”:

     A.  Given to Moses and Israel; Deuteronomy 5:2-3

           1.  It was part of God’s covenant; Deuteronomy 5:1-21 (14)

           2.  Called the “Sabbath” of “rest”; Deuteronomy 5:12-15;

                Leviticus 23:3

           3.  The seventh day, God ceased from creation; Genesis 2:2

     B.  The “Sabbath” was never meant for Christians; Deuteronomy 5:2

II.  “THE LAND OF REST”: Hebrews 4:8

      A.  Moses was not allowed to enter; Numbers 20:7-12

      B.  Most of the adult generation were not allowed in; Hebrews 3:16-19

            1.  They doubted God; Numbers 13:27-29; 14:1-2

            2.  Lacked confidence in their own abilities; Hebrews 3:4-19

       C.  Years later Joshua was able to say: Joshua 22:4

III.  FINAL REST COMES THROUGH CHRIST: Hebrews 4:9-11

       A.  He promised “rest” from sin:

             1.  The guilt and defilement; Hebrews 10:2

             2.  The condemnation of sin; Romans 8:1

             3.  The punishment for sin; Romans 6:23

       B.  Christ promises “rest” in heaven; Hebrews 4:9-11

       C.  “Rest” from labor; Revelation 2:10

CONCLUSION:

       A.  God’s rest is promised to the faithful; Hebrews 4:1

       B.  Salvation and heaven are too wonderful to neglect; Hebrews 2:3

       C.  “Just one glimpse of Him in glory will the toils of life repay”
