SALVATION IS NEAR

ROMANS 13:9-21

INTRODUCTION:

A.  What if you knew:

      1.  You would be judged tomorrow; Romans 14:10

      2.  We cannot know these things; Mark 13:32

B.  We can know:

      1.  That life on earth is brief; James 4:13-17

      2.  When we die we go into eternity; Matthew 25:46

      3.  Salvation is coming soon; Romans 13:11-12

C.  Not deliverance from past sins; Romans 6:17-18

      1.  Called justification; Romans 5:1

      2.  A salvation “soon coming”; Romans 13:11

D.  Salvation yet to be revealed; I Peter 1:3-9

E.  Eternal glorification; Romans 8:17

F.  The Bible teaches “the day is at hand”, therefore we should: Romans 13:12

I.  “WAKE” AND BE ALERT: Romans 13:11

A.  We must cast off the works of darkness; John 12:35; Ephesians 5:11-12

B.  Christians are to be “awake’; Romans 13:11

     1.  A positive side, action; Ephesians 2:1

     2.  “Awake” out of sleep, religious indifference

     3.  Characteristics of those who are awake; I Thessalonians 5:4-6

C.  Put on the “armor of light”; Romans 13:12

     1.  Faith, hope, and love; I Thessalonians 5:8

     2.  Being in the light requires knowledge and obedience; I John 1:7

II.  CHRISTIANS MUST BE DAYLIGHT PEOPLE: Romans 13:13

A.  Walk in a way that is becoming of Christianity

      1.  The course is clearly marked; Isaiah 35:8

      2.  Jesus stated; Matthew 7:13-14

B.  Negatives of the Christian walk; Romans 13:13

      1.  “Intemperance” = “lack of control” (reveling, drunkenness)

      2.  “Immorality” = “sexual sins”

      3.  Strife and jealousy; Matthew 5:23-24

III.  CHRISTIANS MUST CHOOSE THE LORD OVER SIN: Romans 13:14

A.  The “flesh” has the power to control us

      1.  We can walk after the flesh; Romans 8:4

      2.  We can allow sin to “reign” in our bodies; Romans 6:12

B.  Lust is evil desire, “sin in progress”; James 1:12-14

C.  We must “put on the Lord Jesus Christ”

      1.  Originally done in baptism; Galatians 3:26-27

      2.  Must continue to put Him on; Romans 13:14

      3.  Make Him the “Lord” of our lives; Philippians 2:10-11

CONCLUSION:

A.  Salvation is Coming Soon: Life on earth will soon be over

B.  We may right now be closer to eternity than we imagine: Song “One Sweetly Solemn Thought”                  describes “feet slipping o’er the brink”
