“WHAT WE SPEAK”

ACTS 4:13-20

INTRODUCTION:

A.  The events of Acts 3, the healing of the lame man:

      1.  Priests felt threatened by the miracle; Acts 4:16

      2.  They had no means to stand against such great power; Acts 4:14

      3.  Only one option; Acts 4:17

B.  Peter’s reply to their command; Acts 4:18-20

C.  God’s people must have this same attitude; “What We Speak”

I.  THE PROPHETS OF OLD SPOKE THE WORD OF GOD:

A.  The prophet Jeremiah was shamefully treated; Jeremiah 20:2

      1.  Like many Jeremiah’s reaction was to hold back; Jeremiah 20:9

      2.  Nobody wants to hear it; Jeremiah 1:7

      3.  Jeremiah was compelled to speak the word of God; Jeremiah 20:9

B.  David spoke of God’s wondrous works; Psalm 105:1-5

II.  THE APOSTLES AND THE 1ST CENTURY CHURCH:

A.  Peter and John threatened; Acts 4:18-21

B.  Paul and Silas beaten and put into prison; Acts 16:20-25

C.  Others in the church:

     1.  Stephen; Acts 7:54-60

     2.  The church; Acts 8:3

D.  In spite of persecution the church persevered; Acts 2:42; 8:4

III.  CHRISTIANS TODAY MUST:

A.  Speak the truth; John 8:32; Titus 2:1

B.  Stand firm on the word of God; I Corinthians 15:58

C.  Teach, preach, and live by the word of God; John 17:17; I Timothy 4:12;

      II Timothy 4:2

CONCLUSION:

A.  We must speak when others are denying the word; I Peter 4:11; Matthew 6:20-21

B.  Failure to “speak” will cost us our souls; John 15:1-3; I Peter 3:17
