WHICH IS THE GREATEST COMMANDMENT?

MARK 12:28-34

INTRODUCTION:

A.  God’s love for man has been clearly demonstrated:

      1.  Old Testament - Husband for a wife; Isaiah 54:5-6

      2.  Father for a child; Hosea 11:1-4

      3.  New Testament – John 3:16-17

B.  God’s love offers both/either reward or curse; Deuteronomy 30:19-20

C.  God gave His best and accepts nothing less; Romans 12:1-2

D.  A study of “Which Is The Greatest Commandment”

I.   FROM AWE TO FEAR TO LOVE; Exodus 20:18-21

A.  After forty years; a command to love; Deuteronomy 6:4-5; Deuteronomy 13:1-4

B.  Israel was told to love God; Deuteronomy 30:6, 16, 19-20

II.  LOVE FOR GOD; THE GREATEST COMMANDMENT: Mark 12:29-30

A.  All the law and prophets hang on these; Matthew 22:36-40

B.  More important than offerings and sacrifice; Mark 12:33

C.  Essential to eternal life; Luke 10:25-28

D.  We must love God more than anything else: Matthew 6:33

      1.  More than our possessions; Matthew 6:24

      2.  More than our family; Matthew 10:37

      3.  More than life itself; John 12:25

III.  LOVING GOD: WHY AND HOW:

A.  We should love God “because He first loved” us; I John 4:10, 19

      1.  Sent Jesus to die for us; John 3:16

      2.  Forgives our sins; Luke 7:39-47

B.  We show love for God by accepting Jesus; John 14:23

C.  We show love for God by loving one another; I John 4:20-21

IV.  BLESSINGS OF LOVING GOD: Romans 8:28

A.  No mind can imagine all that God has prepared; I Corinthians 2:9

B.  God will care for us and give us eternal rest; Psalm 23:1; II Timothy 4:6-8

CONCLUSION:

A.  God’s love is always available; II Peter 3:9

B.  The choice is yours; Joshua 24:15

C.  What choice have you made: what is your first love?
